Effect of Cashew Nut Shell Ash on Volumetric Shrinkage of Compacted Clay Soil

 Hydraulic conductivity value of a compacted clay soil can rise above the minimum regulatory during desiccation thereby induces large cracks in an engineered landfill. In quest to reduce degree cracking that will be generated dues volumetric shrinkage soil, which turn amount leachate percolating into underground water system, investigation was performed by treating with up 16% Cashew Nut Shell Ash (CNSA) content using three compactive efforts (Standard proctor (SP), West African standard (WAS) and Modified Proctor (MP)) at -2, 0, 2 4% optimum moisture (OMC). Samples were extruded from compaction moulds placed on laboratory table air dry for 30 days uniform regulated temperature 27 ± 2Oc order evaluate suitability material construction cover liner Results indicated OMC maximum density (MDD) increased higher CNSA treatment. Volumetric strain (VSS) with; CNSA, molding relative optimum. Effect showed all specimens prepared 2% wet 8% soil-CNSA mixtures efforts, met allowable VSS criterion of4%, thus making suitable waste dumping ground.
